I was recently a recipient of the The Mayor’s Neighborhood Arts & Heritage Grant Program
in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and I learned so much about myself. I learned that I have come a long way, but I still have
room for improvement. I feel that my expectations exceed my actual skill : / BUT that is no longer a hurdle for me (anymore) I also walk away with a HUGE amount of respect for indie creators who do this on a regular basis and somehow manage to maintatin jobs and families. I'm look at you Janet and Martheus ;)
I really needed this. I have been sitting on this idea for almost 3 years when I received the grant, and I was shocked at how many people thought this was a good idea. Yup, I needed this :)

Practice makes perfect

After taking a figure drawing workshop at the Society of Illustrators, I feel a little bit better with my anatomy and I joined a forum that focuses on anatomy, etc. It's pretty cool. :)

ATTENTION BUDDING GRAPHIC DESIGNERS! *pottymouth alert*

this is a perfect example of what i absolutely cannot fucking stand. artists, do not not fall for this "we are helping you by building your portfolio" bullshit. they are paying for a PRODUCT and that goddamned product is your art!!! i dont care if youve only done graphic design for your  great-grandma Bessie's obituary, you have experience in making something. companies like this are too fucking cheap and lazy to hire their own freelance graphic designer. i repeat: DO NOT WORK FOR FREE
"we have a rough sketch of the of the direction we would like to go in...the rest is up to you"
what this means is they will bug the shit out of you until you either A: give them exactly what they want (which you wont by the way) or B: you walk off and they keep your work for the next dumbass looking to "build their portfolio".
if you really want to build your portfolio, do it!! the best portfolios have original work in them-not bland corporate picnic flyers. find tutorials for whatever it is you are doing, study the masters of your chosen craft and stay the hell away from people and companies like this.
